- THROWBACK THURSDAY: WHEN BOX JAILS WERE ALL THE RAGE
Way back in 1895 Denver had these “Patrol Box Jails,” also known as corner jails. They were a prototype. This one in particular sat at the corner of 19th and Larimer Street. They made things pretty convenient for our officers, most of whom walked their beat. When an officer arrested a bad guy, they could detain them in the box jail. When the door to the box was shut, it sent an automatic signal to the headquarters that summoned the patrol wagon. The arresting officer would go on walking their beat and the patrol wagon would pick up the bad guy. The box jails were only used for a few years.10 hours ago ·
